About the Institute for Advanced Studies

The Institute for Advanced Studies is a place where profound, groundbreaking concepts are developed and explored, with the aim of enhancing the culture, society and long-term prosperity of Scotland and the UK and their future scientific and technological capabilities.

  • A place for unconstrained thinking that challenges conventional wisdom and opinion,
  • funding programmes of enquiry that cross disciplinary boundaries, with public and policy engagement at their core;
  • bringing together key participants from around the world, marshalling and deploying knowledge from academics, industrialists, the public, policy-makers, practitioners, and business professionals;
  • a constantly-renewing knowledge exchange community, producing direct outcomes, but also stimulating sustainable collaborations and new networks within the UK and internationally for the long-term;
  • a distinctive new capacity to respond to strategic problems arising in rapidly changing political, environmental, technological and social landscapes,
  • occupying a clear niche in the knowledge exchange landscape, between think tanks and subject-focused research institutes;
  • bringing key participants together from around the world together in a multi-disciplinary, multi-sector environment means their experience can be deployed in fresh ways;
  • encouraging and inspiring younger researchers across Scotland;
  • adding value to research already funded in universities and other institutes,
  • growing into a national institution for the people of Scotland and the UK, as a partnership of universities, learned societies and other stakeholders.

The Institute for Advanced Studies was established in central Glasgow in January 2009, and hosts and funds high-profile and timely programmes that connect with issues of public concern and relevance. To find out more about our programmes, please visit the Programme pages on our website.
